Cookware Chemical Disclosure
PFAS DISCLOSURE
PTFE, PFA and FEP are all fluoropolymers that create a non-stick surface on the food-contact surface of cookware and bakeware products. Although inert solids, PTFE, PFA and FEP are classified as PFAS substances and must be disclosed. Given that PFAS is a broad categorization that includes thousands of fluorochemicals, we recommend visiting the below source to learn more about the different types of PFAS substances.https://cookwareandbakeware.org/good-science/
At Sophia & William we take product safety seriously and strive to comply with all laws applicable to our products. Sophia & William products are made from the highest quality materials and are tested to rigorous safety standards. The cookware products identified here comply with relevant limits and rules established by the federal Food and Drug Administration and the European Union, including the relevant requirements of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations governing the safe use of product components in direct contact with food.
Cookware Chemicals Disclosure
PTFE coated products contain PFAS chemicals ( polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP)), which are used for their non-stick properties.
California Assembly Bill 1200 (“A.B. 1200”) is a law that sets forth disclosure and labelling requirements for manufacturers of cookware:
1. "Cookware" means durable houseware items that are used in homes and restaurants to prepare, dispense, or store food, foodstuffs, or beverages. “Cookware” includes pots, pans, skillets, grills, baking sheets, baking molds, trays, bowls, and cooking utensils.
2. "Kitchen Electrics" encompasses a variety of small, electric-powered appliances designed for kitchen use, including blenders, food processors, coffee makers, toasters, electric kettles, electric grills, waffle makers, electric skillets, mixers, hand blenders, food choppers, electric can openers, electric knives, rice cookers, juicers, and electric citrus presses. These appliances are tailored to streamline and enhance various aspects of food preparation and cooking.
3. The disclosure and labeling requirements only apply when a listed chemical is intentionally included in the handle of the product or in any product surface that comes into contact with food, foodstuffs, or beverages.
4. The designated chemicals are the Candidate Chemicals identified in the Safer Consumer Products Regulations.
5. "Intentionally added chemical" means a chemical that a manufacturer has intentionally added to a product and that has a functional or technical effect on the product, including the components of intentionally added chemicals and intentional breakdown products of an added chemical that also have a functional or technical effect in the product.
The following tables identify the products for which the chemical disclosure is required to comply with A.B. 1200. It also complies with Colorado House Bill 22-1345 regarding the presence of intentionally added PFAS in cookware products.
